[School Students]

Willowgrove Primary School began in 1994 with a vision to give each student personal attention and encouragement through a low student/teacher ratio. Over the years, the school has grown from one classroom to three.

All aspects of a child's development are best nurtured within a positive and supportive environment. At Willowgrove Primary School, teachers work to educate the whole child through experiences which encourage not only intellectual development, but also spiritual, emotional, social and physical growth.

The experiences of the early school years mould a child's attitude toward learning. Teachers at Willowgrove Primary School promote a love for learning and empower learners to develop critical thinking skills, good work habits and a positive sense of self-worth.

Guiding Principles

  • To provide a positive and supportive classroom
  • To maintain a low student/teacher ratio
  • To promote Christian values
  • To encourage community involvement
  • To encourage an appreciation of our natural world

Program

Willowgrove Primary School offers Junior Kindergarten to to Grade Three. Classes are taught by qualified teachers who adhere to the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum guidelines. Curriculum subjects include Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Music, Art and Drama.

While student progress is reported formally threes times per year, parents are encouraged to discuss their child's progress and programming throughout the year. Open communication between teachers and parents is an essential part of the education process.

In addition to providing a solid base in academic subjects, there are several aspects of our program that are unique, including peace education, outdoor education, an emphasis on Christian values and our annual special events.

[Studies, Education, Instruction, Learning]

Peace Education

Beginning in Kindergarten, students learn practical skills in conflict resolution. Topics of study include active listening, inclusion, diversity, cooperation and peer mediation. At recess, teachers assist students in putting these skills into practice when conflicts arise on the playground. Students learn leadership skills and social skills while working with others in a group.

Outdoor Education

The school is set on a beautiful 100-acre farm with a creek, pond, woodlot and barns housing many farm animals. Students at Willowgrove Primary School participate in the seasonal programs provided by the Outdoor Education Centre. Teachers use the natural setting at Willowgrove to enhance the learning in the classroom.

Teaching Christian Values

There are monthly all-school assemblies where students sing, pray and perform poems, songs or plays. Guest speakers, storytellers, or community members are invited to share their faith experiences in practical ways. Throughout the year, students participate in hands-on service projects, such as collecting food for a local food bank, visiting seniors' homes, and knotting quilts or collecting school supplies to be sent to people in developing countries.

In each classroom, a child's spiritual development is nurtured daily through singing together and participating in our circle times where students and teachers share concerns and pray together.

Special Events

There are many exciting events built into the school calendar that have become school traditions. Each month there are theme days, such as Pajama Day, Backwards Day and Hat Day. At the beginning of every season, students participate in a seasonal celebration. There are two all-school performances each year: the Christmas Play and Concert, and the Spring Graduation and Concert. In order to emphasize our commitment to peacemaking and earthkeeping, we celebrate several special days throughout the year such as Peace Day, Earth Day and Diversity Day.
